A person’s accomplishments in life are first set within the perimeters of defining what kind of life is worth living. Individuals with disabilities have numerous examples of extreme opposite lifestyles, meaning either we see examples of individuals with disabilities struggling daily to survive with limited quality of life or we see examples of famous individuals with disabilities who are public figures, famous, or wealthy beyond median income. Consider this: It is totally possible and reasonable to aim for ordinary. Many aspects of living with a disability set us apart from the norm. It’s time for the golden standard and expectation of individuals with disabilities to assume normalcy by default. Unless I prove the need to be seen less than or beyond ordinary, society should, naturally, assume I am part of the average, educationally, professionally, functionally, socially, and so forth (because you obviously get the point).
